From greenhouse to kitchen table

HURON — For those passing by, it might not look like much. But a large, unassuming building on a stretch of Rye Beach Road in Huron offers flavorful, farm-fresh produce that will be a great addition to any table, whether at a restaurant or at home. The location covers approximately 80 acres, with 75 acres designated for greenhouse growing space, and is owned by Mucci Farms, a greenhouse grower and supplier based in Ontario, Canada. Dave Loewen, the general manager of the Huron location, stated that Mucci Farms started construction on the Huron facility in 2017 and employs about 225 workers across various operations, including growing, packaging, maintenance, food safety, and administration. "This significant investment has allowed us to establish a strong U.S. growing presence to meet increasing demand for fresh, local produce year-round," Loewen said. Long-term commitment to fresh produce The facility is primarily recognized for its tomato products, such as Tomatoes on the Vine and its acclaimed Cherto Cherry Tomatoes, but it also grows cucumbers as needed. "The crop mix evolved in response to market trends and retail demand, and the facility's flexible growing systems allow for continued adaptation as needed," Loewen said. Situated strategically in northern Ohio, the Huron facility plays a vital role in Mucci Farms' North American distribution network. Loewen added that its proximity to major retail distribution centers in the Midwest and Southeast United States "allows the company to deliver fresh product quickly and efficiently." While the Huron site is currently landlocked and lacks immediate room for expansion, Loewen emphasized that the focus remains on maximizing efficiency and productivity within the facility. "The facility employs advanced growing methods, including water recirculation systems, integrated pest management, and energy-efficient technologies," Loewen said. "The company is also actively pursuing eco-conscious packaging solutions in line with its sustainability goals."
