Former Tiffin City Schools super hire in jail again

CORTLAND — Van McWreath, now-former superintendent of Tiffin City School District, found himself back in Trumbull County jail for a short time Wednesday. McWreath appeared in Central District court Wednesday and admitted to Judge Thomas Campbell that he had violated terms of his bond, which ordered him not have contact with the victims in his case. Court records show Campbell set a new bond at $2,500 which McWreath had posted later Thursday and he was released from jail.McWreath resigned his new position at TCS following a June 25 special meeting of the board.McWreath and the district agreed upon a $52,500 settlement as part of his resignation. "The agreement was made with efforts to do what is best to move past this unfortunate situation and avoid extensive and costly litigation," a statement from the district reads. "We agreed to the settlement and are excited to move the district forward." At the same meeting Friday, the district announced a replacement for superintendent, Michael Zalar, most recently from North Olmsted City Schools, where he served as superintendent for 12 years. The three counts of unlawful restraint charged to McWreath stem from a May 16 incident where, according to a Cortland police report, an intoxicated McWreath trapped three women in the basement of their St. Andrews home. The door was able to be broken open and one of the women was able to get out. She reported she was assaulted after breaking free.It wasn't until nearly a month later, June 10, that Trumbull County assistant Prosecutor Deena DeVico decided to file the charges.McWreath is due in Trumbull County Central District Court at 11:30 a.m. Aug. 9 for a pretrial hearing.
