McClain wins reelection in 87th House District

Republican incumbent Riordan McClain has won reelection in the race for the 87th district of the Ohio State House of Representatives, according to unofficial results from the Seneca County Board of Elections. McClain received just over three-quarters of the vote in Seneca County. As of newspaper deadline, McClain was ahead 40,530 votes to 12,735 across the 87th District, according to the Ohio Secretary of State's website. The term for Ohio State House Representatives is two years. Representatives also cannot serve more than four consecutive terms. The 87th district includes just over 120,000 people. McClain was first elected to office in 2018. His current term as state representative for the 87th district ends on December 31, 2020. His father, Jeff McClain, previously served in the same office from 2009 to 2016. During his first term, McClain served on the Ways and Means Committee, the Economic Workforce Development Committee and the Transportation and Public Safety Committee. For this election cycle, he received $8,471 in donations from 20 unique donors, the majority of which were political action committees or special interest groups. The three largest individual donors were all members of the Reineke family. Nick Barnes, McClain's opponent and political newcomer, received $1,125 from 16 unique donors. Though Barnes ran as a Democrat, he considered himself more of an independent. Despite a lack of early fundraising, Barnes received nearly a quarter of all votes cast in the district in the spring primary election, and received about the same percentage in the general election this week.
