It’s that time of year again.
For two days only, Jan. 24 and 31, the Seneca County Dog Warden’s office will be selling dog licenses in Fostoria.
Dog licenses can be purchased from 12-4:30 p.m. both days on the second floor of the Municipal Building for a fee of $15. Fees for all licenses purchased after Jan. 31 will double to $30, said Seneca County Dog Warden Kelly Marker.
As part of a joint effort, Marker said both Seneca and Wood counties will be selling licenses on Jan. 24. However, Wood County dog license registration will be $14 with the price jumping to $28 after Jan. 31.
For those with a new dog or who no longer have their application, Marker said she will have applications available both days for people to fill out. Information all dog owners must know include: breed; age; gender; appearance (colors); address; and, a phone number.
Dog owners who will be unable to make it to the Municipal Building on either day will also have the option to send someone in for them with the necessary information, Marker said.
If a loose dog is found with a license, Marker said the dog’s and the owner’s information can be looked up on the Seneca County Auditor’s website so the canine can be returned to its family.
“The importance of dog license is actually putting it on the dog,” Marker said. “If a dog is lost, we can get the dog back to the person that owns the dog.”
Dog licenses are also important in that they are the sole source of funding for the dog warden’s office.
“The dog licenses support our Dog and Kennel Fund, which supports our whole operation,” she said. “We don’t receive county tax dollars. The only funding we receive is from the dog licenses.”
Seneca County dog licenses can also be purchased online at www.doglicenses.us/OH/Seneca or at the Seneca County Auditor’s Office, 109 S. Washington St., Tiffin. Marker said dog owners looking for a longer-lasting registration can purchase three-year and permanent licenses from the auditor’s office.
The 2014 dog registration for Wood County may be filed by mail, in person, or on the Internet. All mailed applications must include the license fee, dog information and a self-addressed, stamped envelope for return of the license with a postmark of Jan. 31.
Wood County licenses can be purchased in person at the Wood County Auditor’s office on the second floor of the county office building between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, or at the Wood County Dog Shelter. Internet applications may be made at http://dogtags.co.wood.oh.us/ and does require an additional $2 processing fee per license which goes to the online firm processing the credit card purchase.

Applicants are advised not to send cash with a mail-in application.
The Wood County District Board of Health has adopted a regulation requiring all dogs be immunized against rabies. All rabies information must be provided in the application process.
In addition to the doubled registration fee for Seneca County, Marker said anyone who has not registered their canine companion by Jan. 31 will be subject to a citation. The first offense for an unregistered dog is a possible fine of up to $100 with no jail time. The second offense will cost a fine of up to $250 and a possible 30 days in jail.
