Facebook ‘friends’ of the hacked account were sent a ‘message’ soliciting funds, according to a press release. The ‘friends’ were notified they were winners of $150,000 from the Federal Empowerment Agency and needed to pay $975 upon delivery of the check.

“The attempted scam is an example of ‘Phishing’ which is an email fraud method in which the offender(s) send out legitimate looking email or online messaging in an attempt to gather personal or financial information from the recipients,” the press release states.

The sheriff’s office reminds people to use common sense and carefully screen all posts and messages of suspicious content.
