Reds Demote Cingrani, Marshall Set For Surgery

CINCINNATI (AP) — Left-handed reliever Sean Marshall will have surgery on his left shoulder, the latest setback for the Reds setup man.

The Reds moved Marshall to the 60-day disabled list on Friday before the start of an interleague series against Toronto. Marshall was 0-0 with a 7.71 ERA in 15 relief appearances. He was on the disabled list twice last season with shoulder problems and started this season on the DL as well.

The Reds optioned left-hander Tony Cingrani to Triple-A Louisville. He’s 2-8 with a 4.55 ERA in 11 starts and two relief appearances.

Right-handed reliever Jumbo Diaz was called up to take Cingrani’s spot. It will be his major league debut following 12 seasons and 340 appearances in the minors.
