Officials In W. Tenn. Find Missing Airplane, Pilot

COVINGTON, Tenn. (AP) — Authorities in West Tennessee say a pilot was injured when a single-engine plane crashed near Covington Municipal Airport.

Tipton County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Billy Daugherty said Wednesday the Piper PA28 was found in a heavily wooded area in neighboring Lauderdale County, near the Hatchie River. Daugherty says emergency crews were removing the pilot, who suffered serious injuries, from the woods.

The man, whose name hasn’t been released, will be flown to a hospital. Federal officials say the plane departed from Dayton-Wright Brothers Airport in Ohio.

Daugherty says the pilot told air controllers he planned to land at about 11 a.m. at the airport 45 miles northeast of Memphis. The plane never landed, and authorities began a search.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the cause of the crash.
