John J. Nick, 77, formerly of Fostoria and a 23-year resident of Bradenton, Florida, passed away January 29, 2017 in Bradenton.
He was born February 25, 1939 in Fostoria to the late Norbert Nick and Anna (Valenti) Nick-Tong. He married Syvilla J. “Sis” Schmersal on May 29, 1974 in Gate City, Virginia.
Surviving is his wife, Syvilla J. Nick, Ottawa; daughters, Michelle (Keith) Duling, Ottawa and Kathy (Nathan) Thompson, Fostoria; son, Scott (Jennifer) Ricker, Ottawa; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a step-sister, Donna Below, North Carolina. He was preceded in death by two daughters, Nicole Nick (2011) and Caroline Nick (2013); a sister, Carolyn Gillig; and a step-sister, Sharon (the late Dan) Corbin.
John had been a conductor with Norfolk & Southern Railroad for 33 years, based out of Bellevue. He was a member of St. Wendelin Catholic Church and a 1957 graduate of St. Wendelin High School. He had also been a member of the Fostoria Eagles, Moose, and Fostoria United Sportsman Club.
A Funeral Mass will be Friday, August 11, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in St. Wendelin Catholic Church for John, Nicole and Caroline Nick. A luncheon will follow in the Parish Hall, and their remains will be buried at St. Wendelin Catholic Cemetery at 2:30 p.m. with committal prayers.
