John Sterling McLaughlin, 79, Fostoria, passed away at Good Shepherd Home in Fostoria on July 5, 2014 surrounded by his family. John was born November 7, 1934 to the late Alford and Kathryn McLaughlin in Fostoria. He was married to Shirley Ann Brewer on December 19, 1954, and she survives.
He is also survived by three children, Patricia A McLaughlin-Lopez (Gordon), David S McLaughlin (Laura), and J Michael McLaughlin (Kim). He enjoyed and loved his 11 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. John also is survived by a sister, Ann Shaffer (Richard), of Michigan City, Indiana.
John was preceded in death by a daughter, Judith Kay McLaughlin.
After retiring from the Union Carbide facility in Fostoria, he went on to work at the Geary Family YMCA “” where the children quickly came to know him as John – “The guy who could fix anything”. John also proudly served in the United States Army as a paratrooper often joking about jumping out of a “perfectly good airplane”.
Over the years, John and Shirley had the good fortune of being able to travel the country either on his motorcycle or in their motor home.
John spent his final years in the Alzheimer Unit at the Good Shepherd Home in Fostoria, where he was loved and cared for as if he was one of their own. Not only did they take care of John, they also took care of the entire family trying to cope with what life has dealt. It was obvious he was loved by everyone and he loved each and every one of you.

Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, July 10, 2014 at Knollcrest Cemetery, 18085 Ohio 12, Arcadia. Reverend Kay Hatch will officiate. Military Honors will be performed by the United Veterans of Fostoria. Local arrangements were handled by Harrold-Floriana Funeral Home, Fostoria.
