James E. Gase

James E. “Jim” Gase, 92, of New Riegel, passed away Thursday morning, May 8, 2014 at Good Shepherd Nursing Home, Fostoria.
On November 29, 1921 in Berwick, OH, he was born to Stephen M. and Agnes (Houck) Gase. He married Ethel V. Tiell on August 31, 1946 in St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Frenchtown.
Survivors include a son, Larry (Merri) Gase of Fostoria; daughters, Judy Mileto of Sycamore, Sharon Gase of New Riegel, Kathleen Hemminger of Texas, and Charlene Gase of New Riegel; sister-in-law, Arlene Tiell of Upper Sandusky; brothers-in-law, Robert Roth of Clyde and Pete (Joyce) Tiell of New Riegel; 14 grandchildren; and 28 great grandchildren.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ethel of 48 years; son, PFC. James F. Gase, who died during the Vietnam Conflict; brothers, Paul and Joe Gase; and sister, Mary Lou Huffubaur.
Mr. Gase was a member of All Saints Parish, St. Nicholas Chapel, Frenchtown and a graduate of McCutchenville High School. He served in the United States Army during World War II from June 18, 1943 to December 26, 1945 in New Guinea and the Philippines. He worked at Golden Acre Turkey Farm, retired in 1978 from Ford Motor Co. after 32 years and was a member of the New Riegel American Legion, Post 354, Knights of Columbus and the Boy Scouts Post 354.
Jim was instrumental in helping start the little league baseball fields in New Riegel and helping in the construction of the American Legion. He enjoyed gardening, mowing, riding motorcycles, his antique tractor, making his annual sauerkraut and loved the Ohio lottery and going to casinos.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 15, 2014 at All Saints Parish, St. Nicholas Chapel, Frenchtown with Rev. Timothy Kummerer officiating. A Rosary will be prayed 20 minutes prior to Mass. Burial will follow in St. Nicholas Cemetery with military honors conducted by the New Riegel American Legion Post 354.
Friends may visit with the family from 2-7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 14, 2014 at Hoffmann-Gottfried-Mack Funeral Home & Crematory, 236 S. Washington St., Tiffin, Ohio 44883, 419-447-2424. A Christian Wake Service will begin at 1:45 p.m. The New Riegel American Legion Post 354 will pay their respects and conduct a service at 7 P.M.
Memorial contributions may be made to the New Riegel EMS and Fire Department and All Saints Parish, St. Nicholas Chapel, Frenchtown Cemetery Fund, All Saints Parish, St. Nicholas Chapel, Frenchtown Masses or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
