Mamie Sue Tate

Mamie Sue Tate, 76 of Dacula, GA, died Thursday, March 6, 2014 at her son’s residence surrounded by her family. She was born March 14, 1937 in Newbern, TN, the daughter of the late Rev. Walter Hurse and late Naomi (Doakes) Hurse. She grew up in her father’s church, Faith Church of God in Christ, Port Clinton, OH, where at the tender age of 12, she took on the church piano duties.
In October of 1957, Mamie Sue married the late Ret. USAF Staff Sgt and Pastor Wilbur Tate, Jr of Findlay, OH. After a 10-year absence traveling abroad due her husband’s military career, the Tate family returned to Fremont, OH. Mamie Sue and her newly ordained husband, Wilbur rebuilt Faith AME Chapel in Fostoria where they grew the congregation from 4 to 200 members over the next 17-years. In addition, Mamie Sue maintained a full management position at American Electric Power in Fremont and Fostoria for many years.
In 1995, Mamie Sue and her husband relocated to a much warmer climate in Phoenix, AZ to join her son, where they continued to live for the next 18-years. Over those years, Mamie continued her evangelical involvement by joining Murph Community AME of Phoenix. Due to health concerns, Mamie and her late husband moved to Georgia to live with their son, Wilbur and his wife in mid 2012.
Surviving is her son, Wilbur Tate III (Rosa) of Dacula, GA and their children, Monique Ross (Clauzell) of Snellville, GA, Damien Tate (Amber) of Phoenix, AZ, and Sade’ Drake of Lawrenceville, GA; and a foster daughter, Desiree (Duncan) McBeth (Albert) of Newport News, VA and their children, Trevon and Marquon McBeth of Fostoria, OH and Stephon McBeth of Scottsdale, AZ. She is also survived by her sisters, Patricia (late Malachi) Jones of Fremont, OH, Jeanette (Supt. Thurmon) Jefferson of Holland, OH, and Pamela (late Supt. Cleodis) Wells of Detroit, MI; and numerous great-grandchildren.
Mamie Sue was preceded in death by her mother, Naomi on October 17, 2013; husband, Wilbur on February 17, 2013; daughter, Susan Renee; brother, Walter Jr.; and sisters, Emma Faye and Harriett.
Public visitation will take place on Saturday, March 15, 2014 from 9:45 a.m. until 10:45 a.m.
Services will be at 11 a.m. at Faith AME Chapel located at 220 Sycamore Street, Fostoria, OH 44830. Burial will follow at Fountain Cemetery located at 702 Van Buren Street, Fostoria, OH 44830. Mann-Hare-Hoening Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.
