Lawyers denounce Marine Corps raid on offices

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Marine Corps officials say they plan to conduct an independent review of evidence seized during a raid on military defense lawyers’ offices by government investigators to see if privileged information was improperly disclosed.

Marine Corps officials issued the statement Friday after The Associated Press reported on the May 2 raid on the offices by military investigators searching for a cellphone tied to a case being tried at Camp Pendleton, north of San Diego.

The Marine Corps called it a “rare event” and said it was appointing an independent judge advocate to review the seized evidence to identify whether any potential privileged material was improperly disclosed.

Lt. Col. Clay Plummer, who oversees Marine Corps defense lawyers for the western United States, denounced the search.
