BLOOMDALE — New Riegel’s last game was four days prior to Saturday’s road trip to Elmwood, but it was the Royals who looked like they’d had rest.
Elmwood held New Riegel scoreless from the field until the final minute of the first quarter to build a 13-6 lead and cruised to a 50-39 nonleague victory to extend its win streak to five games. The struggling Blue Jackets fell to 3-4 on the year.
“We always expected a diamond-and-one or a box-and-one but they took away things we normally do against it,” Blue Jackets coach Cindy Walerius said. “Our turnovers and our missed opportunities from the foul line just killed us. We weren’t able to hit the shots when we needed to.”
Elmwood dominated all facets of the game, including a 34-27 advantage on the boards and forcing 16 turnovers while committing 12 miscues.
The Royals jumped out to a 6-0 lead before Brianna Gillig put the Blue Jackets on the board with a pair of free throws. Elmwood pulled ahead 11-2 before Kaitlyn Kirian finally scored from the field.
Although they did pull within four points twice in the third quarter, the Blue Jackets never threatened to overtake the Royals.
“The big key was we took (Brianna) Gillig out of her game,” Elmwood coach Doug Reynolds said. “I mean a kid that’s averaging high 20s, we knew we had to keep her below 20. We did a great job, she had 14 and only a couple of field goals.”
He added, “A big thing is breaking their press and getting some fast break points. I thought inside we did a really good job of controlling the inside. It was a big win.”
Gillig led the Blue Jackets with 14 points despite fouling out at 3:15 of the fourth quarter. Kirian grabbed a team best seven rebounds to go with eight points.
Zoe Shank paced Elmwood with 14 points, including eight in the third quarter. Maddie Schramko pulled down 15 rebounds; all six of her points were on putbacks in the first half.
