Prep volleyball: New Riegel ready to make a run?

Comment: Off

New Riegel has continued its winning ways in volleyball since Cindy Walerius moved into the head girls basketball coaching spot and handed the volleyball keys to her son, Drew Cardwell.
Cardwell’s Blue Jackets took a leap from 12-11 in his first year to 16-9 last season, when they reached the district final before running into eventual champion Arlington.
Now, with defending champion Old Fort having been hit hard by graduation, New Riegel could very well make a run at the Sandusky River League River Division title with a crew of nine returning letterwinners. Among the three seniors are third-team all-Ohio hitter Brianna Gillig and all-SBC setter Lindsay Bouillon.
Hopewell-Loudon also advanced to Division IV district play, and the Chieftains’ list of eight returning letterwinners includes all-around standout Jacque Burns and formidable hitter Kenadee Siebenaller.
Also in the Blanchard Valley Conference, coach Mark Bunn has just two returnees back at Van Buren, but he may have the Black Knights back on a winning path after they fashioned a 12-11 record mark.
Another BVC school, Arcadia, has a strong junior class with hitters Tori Green and Emma Saltzman and libero Sydney Ramsey. And at Vanlue, senior Amanda Clymer will lead a group of Wildcats looking to improve on last year’s records of 2-20 overall and 0-11 in the BVC.
In the Northern Buckeye Conference Elmwood senior Zoe Shank will get some help at the net with the additions of classmates Peighton Troike and Taiah Douglas, who formerly played at now-closed St. Wendelin.
No information was available for Old Fort and Lakota.
Arcadia
HEAD COACH: Jacquie Ramsey (7th year, 90-55).
2016 RECORD: 11-12 overall, 4-7 Blanchard Valley Conference.
RETURNING LETTERWINNERS: Tori Green, jr., MH; Sydney Ramsey, jr., L; Samantha Watkins, jr., OH; Emma Saltzman, sr., MH.
TOP PROSPECTS: Caity Cramer, soph., S; Lyndee Ward, fr., OH.
NOTABLE: Arcadia improved its season and conference record last season. Five key letterwinners are gone, though, so the Redskins will rely on a quartet of returnees, including Ramsey, the school record-holder for digs in a season and a match.

NOTABLE: Look for the Blue Jackets to challenge for the SBC River Division title. Gillig is a third-team all-Ohioan returnee. Bouillon and Hohman also gained all-SBC honors.

HEAD COACH: Mark Bunn (2nd year, 12-11).
2016 RECORD: 12-11 overall, 4-7 Blanchard Valley Conference.
