Area roundup: Fostoria Athletic Boosters Invitational slated for Saturday

A total of 15 schools will converge on Fostoria’s Memorial Stadium on Saturday as Fostoria High School hosts the Fostoria Athletic Boosters Invitational.
Action begins at 9 a.m. with the field events. Running event semifinals are set for 10 a.m. with the finals at noon.
Springfield, last year’s boys and girls champions, will not compete in this year’s event.
Host Fostoria will be joined by St. Wendelin, Arcadia, Hopewell-Loudon, Lakota, New Riegel, Old Fort and Liberty-Benton. Genoa, Toledo Horizon Science Acacemy, Ida, Mich., Seneca East, Lima Temple Christian and Toledo Woodward are also scheduled to compete.
Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for students.
Prep Softball
TIFFIN — New Riegel piled on 10 runs in the first two innings in a 20-hit effort as the it steamrolled Tiffin Calvert 17-4 in Thursday’s Sandusky Bay Conference River division action.
Emily Peters paced the Blue Jackets (8-3, 3-0 SBC River) with four singles and an RBI, while Brianna Gillig (2-1B, 2B, RBI) and Kristin Coleman (1B, 2B, 2 RBI) each added three hits. Kaitlyn Kirian earned the win allowing four runs, one earned, with three strikeouts across three innings.
Mallary Nielsen led Calvert’s (2-4, 1-2) offense with a single, a double and two RBIs. Bria Coleman added two singles. Ashley Reinhart took the loss.

TIFFIN — Grant Vera scored on a wild pitch by Cole Noftz in the bottom of the 10th inning on Thursday to give Tiffin Calvert a 1-0 victory over New Riegel in a Sandusky Bay Conference River Division baseball game.
Both New Riegel’s Louisville-bound Michael Kirian and Kent State signee Peyton Deats of Calvert, both left-handers, were outstanding on the mound for eight and nine innings, respectively, but neither figured in the decision.
Nolan Wuescher pitched the last inning to gain the win after Deats struck out 18 and allowed two hits and two walks as the Senecas moved to 4-7 overall and 3-0 in the SBC.
Noftz, whose double and single accounted for all but one of New Riegel’s hits, took the loss after Kirian surrendered three hits while striking out 17 and walking four.
