Dull shoots 86 in first round

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. — Lakota’s Makayla Dull, the 2013 Division II state champion, struggled to a round of 86 Tuesday in the first round of the Trusted Choice Big I National Championship at Pete Dye Golf Club.
Dull, a rising senior at Lakota, enters today’s second round of the junior event tied for 50th place in the 57-player field.
Dull, who has verbally committed to play at the University of Akron, started the event with a 10-over-par 46 on the back nine of the par 72 course. A big chunk of her trouble came with a quadruple-bogey 8 on the 18th hole.
Dull finished with 40 on the front nine.
Alice Chen of Princeton, New Jersey, claimed the first-round lead with a 70, one shot better than Siranon Shoomee of Sanford, North Carolina.
Avon Lake’s Nikolette Schroeder shot a 73, good for fifth place.
