COLUMBUS — Elmwood’s Jake Wise and Van Buren’s Chance Sonnenberg earned Thursday evening off by posting wins in the first round of the Division III state wrestling championships at Ohio State’s Value City Arena.
But while the other area wrestlers while compete again today, Fostoria High School’s Luke Leonard won’t get to do so.
After sending their opponents into Thursday night’s first round of consolations in the afternoon preliminary matches, both Wise, a senior, and Sonnenberg, a junior, were able to rest until returning for the championship quarterfinals today at 10 a.m.
Wise, coming back strong from a shoulder injury that caused him to miss his entire junior season, edged Wes Buettner of Delphos St. John’s 3-2 in the first round at 170 pounds. Wise will take a 38-1 record into today’s matchup with West Salem Northwestern’s Joey Meek (46-3).
Sonnenberg upped his record to 38-4 with a 4-2 decision over Cincinnati Reading’s Ray Day at 160 pounds. Next up for Sonnenberg is 48-0 Kollin Moore of Creston Norwayne.
Leonard, a junior saw his season end at 38-9 after dropping a pair of close decisions in the Division II tournament.
Georgio Poullas of Canfield nipped Leonard 6-5 in the opening round. Leonard was then eliminated with a 4-2 overtime loss to Springfield Kenton Ridge’s Elijah Cochran.
