Devils paste Chieftains

CAREY — Carey took a 28-point lead into halftime and let the margin hold up as it clinched at least a share of the Midland Athletic League title Monday night with a 72-44 victory over Hopewell-Loudon.
The Blue Devils built a 44-16 halftime lead en route to raising their record to 18-2 overall and 9-0 in the MAL.
Hannah Draper’s 18 points led Carey. Sydney Wentling nailed four 3-pointers and finished with 16 points and six assists, while Shelby Kin added 12 points and six rebounds and Logan Johnson tallied 10 points and three steals.
Aleta Daniel collected 16 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals for the Chieftains (11-9, 4-5), who were plagued by 27 turnovers. Sicily Leiter scored 10 points and Hope Brickner grabbed seven rebounds.
Carey won the junior varsity game 40-24. Makayla Wilson led Hopewell-Loudon with nine points.

MILLBURY — Lake rallied from a 10-point first-quarter deficit and topped Fostoria High School 48-44 Monday night in Northern Buckeye Conference play.
The Lady Red led 16-6 after the first quarter, but the Flyers used a 21-11 second quarter edge to force a 27-27 tie at halftime.
Catie Phalen led Lake (10-10 overall, 7-6 NBC) with 15 points.
The Lady Red (1-18, 0-12) shot 50 percent (17 for 34) from the field but were outrebounded 25-20.
Jada Hampton led FHS with 18 points. Erica Moore had a pair of 3-pointers en route to 10 points while also recording four assists. Olivia Valenti added seven points, five rebounds and two steals.

VAN BUREN — Sawyer Junge led three Van Buren scorers in double figures with 26 points and the Black Knights increased their lead in each quarter en route to a 71-57 win over New Riegel Monday night in nonconference action.
Van Buren shot 48.1 percent (25 of 52) from the field en route to raising its record to 11-7.
Braxton Fasone netted 14 points, Daniel Roberts contributed 10 points and five assists and Marcus Brand notched seven rebounds and three steals for the Black Knights.
Jake Dryfuse led the Blue Jackets (7-10) with 11 points, while Michael Kirian snagged seven boards and Tim Ink handed out four assists.
