When making plans to send expressions of love this Valentine’s Day, don’t forget the senior in your life.
For the third consecutive year, St. Catherine’s Manor of Fostoria will be making special deliveries Wednesday to senior citizens throughout Fostoria in its “Send a Hug to a Senior” outreach program.
“We have limited quantities of boxed chocolates that we will deliver to any senior in Fostoria,” Brenda Kuieck, business development coordinator at St. Catherine’s, said.
“Someone calls and says ‘Hey, take this to my dad. It’s from me, my daughter and grandkids’ or a neighbor or a church or whoever can call us, we will deliver that or people can come in and pick it up. They just need to call and reserve it,” she said.
In addition to a box of chocolates, a poem and carnation will also be included as part of the “Hug” package.
And the cost to the sender is $0.
“It’s free to the community, as a gift from St. Catherine’s,” the business development coordinator said. “We’re buying and happy to deliver it and hope that if anyone needs our services they’d remember us, too. Or if they have questions or want to come for a tour.”
St. Catherine’s had openings for 100 deliveries, but 75 orders have already been placed, leaving room for only 25 more orders at this point.
“Myself and some of the management team makes the deliveries (to Fostoria residents only),” Kuieck said, noting that is the best part of the outreach program.
“Especially when it’s cold and people haven’t gotten out and just to be thought of this way. It’s just really sweet and people appreciate it,” she said.
“We just try to do for the community,” Kuieck said, adding St. Catherine’s also offers monthly education opportunities. “We just wrapped up last week a program given by an elder attorney who addressed senior scams.”
Other community outreach programs include free Bingo the third Thursday of every month from 2-3 p.m.
“Our residents are off doing other things so this is just for the community,” she said, adding upwards of 40 people have come from Fostoria, Fremont, Tiffin and Wayne, among other locations.
“We buy the prizes and there’s a nice coverall prize and we have free desserts and coffee and punch and free blood pressure checks (during the Bingo hour).”
“I just want St. Catherine’s to be the place where people can come, feel comfortable and get their answers. You know, there has been a lot of changes in health care and if we can help with that, we want to be there for that support.”
