Cupcake wars coming to Risingsun

Girton Church of God is hosting a holy cupcake contest that could pay big dividends to the baker of the best little bite of cake.
The Risingsun church is looking for 30 people to enter the contest that could pay $10,000 for the tastiest cupcake. Entry fee is $30 and each contestant is asked to find 30 people or businesses to pay $30 apiece to sponsor the contestant.
A percentage of the $900 each contestant raises will go to support the church as well as to cover the payout for the top three contestants — $10,000 for first place, $2,500 for second place and $1,000 for third.
“This is our first year doing this and we plan to make it an annual event,” said Robin Hindall, church pastor. “Every church has their annual fundraisers whether it be a spaghetti dinner or a fish fry. We’d like this to be ours.”
Hindall said 10 people have already signed up, leaving only 20 spots to round out the inaugural event.
All are invited to judge the cupcakes from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 24 at the Risingsun Park shelter house, 550 Salem St. Cost to be a judge is $3 at the door the day of the event. All proceeds collected at the door will go to the Risingsun Police Department.
“It’s really a win-win,” Hindall said. “The church benefits, the police department benefits and the community benefits.”
The contest rules are pretty straightforward: No box mixes and no store-bought cupcakes may be submitted; the contest is open to those age 13 and up but children under the age of 16 must have adult supervision; contestants can work in teams or pairs but they are responsible for divvying up any winnings; cupcakes must be prepared in a sanitary manner, must be completely baked and ready for judging and must not need refrigeration; contestants are to submit one cupcake entry but provide enough cupcakes for judging. Anyone who owns a baking business is not eligible to enter the contest. Hindall said she estimates 30 cupcakes per contestant should be enough to provide each judge a tasty mouthful.
“We plan to cut the cupcakes up into samples to make sure there’s enough,” she explained. “We’d like the judges to taste each cupcake but we understand that some may have diabetes or other health issues that might prevent them from trying them all.”
In addition to cupcakes, Hindall said there will be plenty of coffee and water to help wash it all down.
Winners will be announced at 3 p.m. the day of the contest. Winnings are subject to change depending on participation.
Hindall said the plan for contest day is to have the bakers on one side of the shelter house and their sponsors on the other side.
“We’re telling the contestants to invite their sponsors and have them set up a vending space with business cards. It’s free advertising,” she explained, adding her best advice for bakers is, “to have fun and enjoy being part of the community and helping the church and the police department.”
