A Mercury Sable rests in a cornfield to the west of U.S. 23 Friday afternoon after colliding with a CSX train. According to a news release from Wood County Sheriff’s Office, Hollie Irving, 23, Tiffin, was traveling eastbound on Switzer Road, north of Fostoria, when she attempted to cross the tracks and was struck by a train traveling northwest. The railroad crossing at that location isn’t equipped with gates or lights; however, it does have signs indicating a railroad crossing is there. The train hit the passenger side of the vehicle, causing it to spin and come to a rest on the east side of the tracks, facing west. The passenger side was smashed in and parts of the vehicle were scattered across the area. After the call was reported at 10:38 a.m., Irving was transported to ProMedica Fostoria Community Hospital by Fostoria Fire Division EMS squad with unknown injuries. West Millgrove Fire Department and CSX personnel also assisted at the scene. No further information was available at press time, as the incident is still under investigation.
