McCOMB — Officials are investigating what caused a Friday fire that damaged an empty McComb church.
The McComb fire station is nearby, and firefighters noticed smoke coming from the McComb United Methodist Church, 204 High St., about 5:40 p.m., McComb Fire Chief Mike Voland said.
The fire damaged the church’s basement and sanctuary. No one was injured and a damage estimate has not been determined, Voland said.
The church is undergoing renovation work, he said. Pews were pushed toward the door and that initially delayed firefighters, who found another entrance, he said.
Assisting were the State Fire Marshal’s Office and fire departments from Liberty Township, Allen Township, North Baltimore and Findlay. The heat and humidity necessitated the additional help, Voland said.
Services at the church have been postponed indefinitely, he said.
