Honoring veterans

BRIAN BOHNERT / the Review Times

CHUCK PARSONS, member of Fostoria Honor Guard, reads a proclamation about the Battlefield Cross Friday morning during a veterans program at the Good Shepherd Home honoring the facility’s residents who served in the military in one form or another. Some sat, some stood but all were together to brave the brisk spring temperatures for the brief ceremony. Veterans from various area organizations, as well as representatives of Fostoria Police Department, were on hand to pay their respects to Good Shepherd Home’s veteran men and women. Parsons, who is himself not a veteran, has followed in the footsteps of his late father who performed the ceremony for 40 years. After his father passed away nearly a decade ago, he said the honor guard asked him to carry on the legacy and be a part of recognizing veterans. As a sign of remembrance and respect of his own, Parsons said he carries his father’s military hat in the pocket of his uniform during every ceremony.
