The Spring Board Meeting of the NKPHTS was recently held at the Age of Steam Roundhouse in Sugarcreek, Ohio. One of our more active members is an employee of AOS and made the day-long event possible. While rather routine matters were addressed by the board, by far, the highlight of the day was a tour of the roundhouse and getting to see NKP Berk 763 “up close & personal.”
The roundhouse was the first functional railroad roundhouse to be built in the United States since 1951. Others have been built since then but were not intended to be functional. At the Age of Steam roundhouse, steam locomotives undergo both routine maintenance and major repairs.
It was a dream of the late Jerry Jacobson to have a facility that was as realistic as reasonably possible to build. That’s why this water tower isn’t simply some fire hydrant with a hose but rather mimics the look and functionality of water towers built during the time when steam was king.
A special Thank You! goes out to the staff & management of the AOS for making our otherwise routine board meeting a very special one indeed.
