Man sentenced in lemur theft

A Leipsic man was ordered to serve time in jail for stealing a lemur from the Putnam County Fair.

Derek W. Mangas, 21, was sentenced today to 20 days in jail and a $500 fine for entering the exotic animal petting zoo and stealing a 6-month-old pet at about 3 a.m. June 29.

Mangas apologized in Putnam County Common Pleas Court.

“I take full responsibility for what I’ve done,” he said.

Assistant Prosecutor Todd Schroeder said Mangas took the lemur from a couple’s exhibit and possessed the animal until August.

“They appeared the next day and their pet lemur was missing. It was very disturbing to them,” he said.

Law enforcement officers discovered online photographs of Mangas and the stolen lemur at college parties, Schroeder said.

Mangas previously pleaded guilty to a fifth-degree felony each of theft and breaking and entering. He was placed into intervention in lieu of conviction.

Courier reporter Ryan Dunn will have more in tomorrow’s newspaper.
