3 dead, Ohio Turnpike shut down after accidents near Sandusky

TOLEDO (AP) — The State Highway Patrol reported three people were killed in accidents involving several tractor-trailers that have shut down the Ohio Turnpike in both directions between Ohio 53 in Fremont and Ohio 4 near Sandusky.

A patrol spokeswoman says a trooper suffered serious injuries when he was pinned between vehicles while investigating one of the accidents. The News-Messenger in Fremont reported that the trooper was investigating a crash when he was struck around 2:05 p.m.

Crashes were reported in both the westbound and eastbound lanes Wednesday afternoon at mile marker 102 eastbound and mile marker 112 westbound.

The turnpike says another pileup has the westbound lanes of the toll road blocked at mile marker 133 in Lorain County .

A big dose of heavy, blowing snow is hitting much of northern Ohio. Many counties are telling drivers to stay off the roads unless they are emergency or essential personnel.
